  • Public school teacher William Glenn Walker was named 2006-07 National Christian Educator of the Year on Aug. 7, by the Christian Educators Association International. He was chosen for the honor by CEAI from among more than 3.5 million educators across the nation.

    Walker teaches students in grades 9-12 at the Bibb County Career Tech Center Magnet School in West Blocton. He has been a teacher for ten years and has 15 years experience as an engineer of flight hardware used on the space shuttle and U.S. Navy jet aircraft. He is pastor of Centreville United Methodist Church and is active in local volunteer efforts. He is a sports commentator for a local Christian radio station.

    Walker has received numerous other awards, including the Dallas County Teacher of the Year in 2001, and the Bibb County Educational Fund Grant in 2004 and 2005.

    Walker received a plaque and monetary award in a ceremony at the Bibb County Institute.
  • The 2006-07 school year at the Alabama School of Fine Arts began with 102 new students enrolled. Admission is by audition in one of six specialty areas: Creative Writing, Dance, Mathematics and Science, Music, Theatre Arts and Visual Arts.

    Area students are: Jessica Horton of Northport, dance; Chelsea Lucas of Northport, theatre arts; Amanda Moore of Northport, creative writing; and Caitlin McKnight of Tuscaloosa, creative writing.
